Last Wednesday we hosted our Term 4 In the Studio-

Last Wednesday we hosted our Term 4 In the Studio- with Larissa Warren.

With over 92 registrations for the workshop- we know you were just as excited!

Larissa talked us through her practice and took us on a tour of her studio in an underground bunker amongst the beautiful scenery of Tamborine Mountain. We learnt all about different clay types and their uses, the colours that can be achieved for different clays and firing temperatures, techniques for decoration and glazing, and some handy tips around storing and preserving clay in the classroom.

🚨Attention all beginner art teachers, teachers considering introducing clay into their art department and anyone wanting a refresher or some new tips- our TERM 4 IN THE STUDIO with LARISSA WARREN is tailored perfectly for you.

Larissa Warren is an established ceramicist and art teacher living on Tamborine Mountain. She works from her home studio; a reclaimed underground bunker.

In this workshop, Larissa will discuss:
⭐️ selecting different types of clays and what applications to use them in.
⭐️ firing temperature, texture, colour and strength.
⭐️ a few basic hand building techniques, pinch pots, coiling, rolling slabs.
⭐️ quick tricks to cut clay, ready for a class in 5 mins.
⭐️ storage of clay projects.
⭐️ how to avoid slumping, breakages and how to repair.
⭐️ everything about drying!
⭐️ how to prevent warping, breakages and kiln blow ups.
⭐️ firing- stacking, kiln shelves and props, how to maintain, safety, ventilation, setting the controller, including a set of firing schedules.
⭐️ glazing.
⭐️ glaze or high firing.
⭐️ problem solving and questions for the artist, such as what kiln should I buy?

Join us for the QATA Term 3 In the Studio online event with artists Dominique Chen & Libby Harward.

⭐️Wed 30th Aug 2023, 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm ONLINE

Dom & Libby will facilitate some guided provocations for teachers to connect/consider/critique the space they are in (class room/home/office etc.), and use the signs/signifiers of the space to re-make or re-sign texts and objects that spark critical conversation.

- Paint pens (e.g. POSCA pens or similar; graphic markers, etc.)

Introducing Saturday workshop artist… Clare Poppi

Clare Poppi is an artist living and working in South-East Queensland, Australia. Her primary practice is in jewellery and small object making, with a focus on ethical design and wearables. She uses a combination of recyclable and biodegradable materials, adopting a ‘cradle-to-cradle’ mentality in her exhibition and production work. Her research focuses on collaborations between jewellers and wearers with the aim of fostering meaningful relationships between the wearer and their jewellery.

⭐️Workshop: Meaningful medallions
In this workshop, you will use basic, low-tech metalsmithing techniques to create simple pendant/ medallions which are a meaningful expression of self.

⭐️ Introducing QATACON23 Saturday workshop host… Marikit Santiago ⭐️

Working across painting and sculpture, Marikit Santiago co- opts her practice with references, imagery, and symbolism from her Australian-Filipino ancestry, Catholicism, and the Western Art canon. Within these pluralities, she interrogates their existing contradictory sensations, values, and ideas.

In the “Just paint over it!” workshop, Marikit Santiago will guide you in the same painting techniques she employs to achieve accuracy in colour, likeness and detail.

⭐️We can now confirm that shortlisted artworks will receive a certificate of appreciation ⭐️-Thank you Coralie Mckenzie we always value member feedback to improve our mission towards arts advocacy.

Recognition of achiement and effort is an important part of arts advocacy, which filters on to passion in the subject in the senior years.

Submissions for our Tote Bag Competition are closing soon- 31st of March. To celebrate the exciting work created in the middle years, teachers are invited to submit an artwork created in Term 1 2023 by a student in years 5 to 9.

Terms and conditions:.

⭐️The teacher who submits the selected artwork will be invited to share the artwork learning experience at the 2023 conference.

⭐️The teacher who submits the selected artwork will receive complimentary conference registration or have their registration fee reimbursed if paid prior to voting close.

⭐️ Winner will have their artwork featured on tote bags and receive a complimentary tote bag.

⭐️ Winners and shortlisted students will receive a certificate.

⭐️Introducing QATACON23 Friday Keynote speaker… Lindy Lee! ⭐️

Lindy Lee is a Chinese-Australian artist who has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. Lee’s practice explores her Chinese roots through the philosophies of Taoism and Buddhism which emphasises humanity’s close relationship to nature and the universe. Her work investigates the interdependence between the material and the immaterial. The use of materials, images and processes in her work can be seen as a metaphor for the porous nature of ‘being in the world’, where the boundaries between ‘self’ and ‘other’, ‘cultures’ and ‘societies’ are permeable. Lee is a founding member of Gallery 4A in Sydney’s Chinatown. She is a former board member of Artspace and the Australian Centre of Photography, former president of the Asian Australian Artists Association, former deputy chair of the Visual Arts and Craft Board of the Australia Council and has been Artist Trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Lindy Lee has just been commissioned to create the 40th anniversary work for the NGA (National Gallery of Australia, Canberra). The work, Ouroboros will become a beacon for the NGA and will be delivered in 2024.

QATACON23- Perspectives ⭐️

Nominate to be part of our teacher showcase! an incredibly event where we hear from our subject-matter experts (you) about practical teaching methodology. Showcase teachers receive a discounted ticket price and this is a great opportunity to gather evidence towards Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher certification.

QATA members are invited to unpack and share an innovative and effective primary, middle or senior visual art learning activity, assessment, concept or experience. The theme of QATACON 23 is 'perspectives'. Please attempt to address this theme in your presentation proposal where possible.

You can present individually or in small teaching teams. Each presentation should be 10–15 minutes long and include spoken and visual components. We are looking for short, sharp and relevant sharing experiences suitable for all QATACON attendees.

Make sure you have the support of your principal to attend the conference on Friday 14 July before applying.

As we enter into the last weeks of the term, don’t forget to be on the lookout for a star student artwork to submit for our tote bag competition.

The QATA Tote Bag Competition is calling for submissions of a middle-years (Years 5-9) student’s artwork to feature on the front of our QATACON 2023 tote bags. The artwork must have been made in 2023.

The student will receive a complimentary tote bag, and the teacher will be invited to present the associated learning activity.
