The Asia Pacific Design Library, State Library of Queensland is delighted to present Designing the Queen’s Baton Professional Development for teachers, educators and designers.

REGISTER: https://baton.eventbrite.com.au/

Date: Tuesday 31 July 2018
Time: 10am – 4pm
Where: SLQ Auditorium 2, level 2, State Library of Queensland

In the Morning Session, hear from Alexander Wall and Rowan Lamont of Designworks, who will present an in-depth session on the topic of designing the Queens’s Baton, design in practice and their triple diamond approach to the design process: Immersion, Ideation and Delivery.

Teachers will explore different design thinking methodologies and the connections that can be made to the new Design General Senior Syllabus using the making of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton as a case study. The GC2018 Queen’s Baton recently received an Australian Good Design Award.

This session will also be available to Live Stream. State Library of Queensland is driven by a commitment to access for all. If your school has an ICSEA value of 1000 or less and you would like to access the Live Stream of the morning session for free, please email us for further details ([email protected]).

Following the Morning Session, Alexander and Rowan will tour participants through Bright Bold Boundless, an exhibition designed and co-curated with Designworks and hosted in the Asia Pacific Design Library. On display are original prototypes, ideation, materials and stories of human-centred design. Previous batons including 1982 Brisbane, 2002 Manchester, 2006 Melbourne, 2014 Glasgow as well as the current 2018 Gold Coast Baton are also on display.

In the Afternoon Session, Designworks will lead hands-on activities that will allow participants to employ skills that contribute to developing a designer’s mindset including empathy building and sketching and prototyping.

The day will end with an option to either:

  • talk with Project Officers from the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority about implementing the Design syllabus in your school in 2019
  • tour The Edge, State Library of Queensland’s library for the future (community makerspace + resource hub for all things art, science, technology and enterprise).

We look forward to having you join us for this exciting day of Design!
