QATA is building on its event series, BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND. We have invited one of our most popular artists from QATACON23, Kitty Horton to conduct a workshop on mark making and photographic transfer
⭐️About the artist:
Brisbane-based artist Kitty Horton completed her Bachelor of Fine Art at QCA, Griffith University and her Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education with QUT. She has exhibited solo shows in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, along with group shows nationally throughout Australia. In addition to Kitty’s private art practice, she is a vocational teacher for TAFE Qld Brisbane. She teaches drawing, painting, printmaking, and professional practice. Her art practice explores the relationship between dry media drawing and oil painting, using themes of abstraction, colour theory and mark making. Inspired by the American Minimalists, Kitty responds to her surroundings through distorted shapes, forms and motifs. Mark-making and serendipitous outcomes, exploit the relationship between painting and drawing in her work.

QATA is building on its event series, BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND. We have invited one of our most popular artists from QATACON23, Dr Vanghoua Anthony Vue to repeat his Tape-afitti workshop and introduce a Wearable Art workshop this term.

⭐️About the artist:
Vanghoua Anthony Vue harnesses the frictions and tensions of cultural difference from his transcultural Hmong Australian experience to develop works that offer more inclusive, diverse and hybrid tropes of belonging. These works often include everyday materials, objects, and processes that are based on Vue’s upbringing in Cairns, the resourcefulness of family members, and the influence of Hmong artistic traditions.
Vanghoua has exhibited in Australia and overseas, including Embodied Knowledge: Queensland Contemporary Art (2022) at QAGOMA and the 6th Singapore Biennale (2019).

QATA is expanding its event series, BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND, by inviting Dr. Vanghoua Anthony Vue from QATACON23, to host both a repeat Tape-afitti workshop and a new Wearable Art workshop this term. The Tape-afitti workshop draws on Vue’s transcultural experience, incorporating everyday materials and Hmong artistic traditions to explore language adaptation and cultural translation within Australia. Tickets are available, with a teacher bursary offered for attendees traveling more than 150km from Townsville.

• Entries must be accompanied by a signed release form which can be found on the google form.
• The teacher who submits the selected artwork will be invited to share the artwork learning experience at the 2024 conference.
• Conference attendees will have an opportunity to vote for the featured artwork during in Term 2, 2024.
• The teacher who submits the selected artwork will receive complimentary conference registration or have their registration fee reimbursed if paid prior to voting close.
• The selected student artist will receive a complimentary tote bag featuring their artwork and a selection of art supplies.

We are looking for:
-primary, middle or senior visual art teachers
learning activities, assessment, concepts or experiences
-individual or small group presentations
-relevant 10-15 minute presentations suitable or adaptable for all QATACON attendees.

Every year, the Queensland Art Teachers Conference

Every year, the Queensland Art Teachers Conference (QATA) hosts the Tote Bag Competition as part of our annual art teachers' conference.

The conference serves as a platform to connect art teachers from across the state. It spans multiple days and includes workshops, professional development sessions and seminars addressing current themes in our practice, along with updates on new curriculum and syllabus.

The Tote Bag Competition provides an opportunity to showcase student achievements from years 5-9 by printing their artworks created in 2024 on the tote bags distributed at the conference. These bags are included with the ticket entry and contain educational resources and advocacy accessories. With an average attendance of 250+ participants state-wide, this competition helps highlight your students' artistic successes to teachers throughout Queensland.

The winning teacher will receive a complimentary conference registration valued at between ($110-285)* be invited to give a brief presentation on the activity, and the student's artwork will be featured on the bag carried by hundreds of art teachers. This presents a valuable chance to showcase your teaching methods and your students' accomplishments in a real-world context. Additionally, the winning student will receive a complimentary tote bag with art supplies.

Tape-affiti was focus of QATA's first 'Back by Pop

Tape-affiti was focus of QATA's first 'Back by Popular Demand' for 2024 with @vanghoua_anthonyvue. In response to Anthony's practice, teachers worked on individual pieces and then created a large scale collaborative work. Much fun was had and Corinda SHS students will love their new windows. More 'Back by Popular Demands' are planned for 2024. Let us know who you'd like to do a workshop with.

Introducing a new QATA event series BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND. QATA will invite one of our great artists from QATACON to repeat the workshop in term 1 and then pay for the artist to travel to a regional cluster to repeat the workshop in term 2.

⭐️About the event:
Tape-affiti : using everyday materials to explore language and culture with artist Vanghoua Anthony Vue

Vanghoua Anthony Vue harnesses the frictions and tensions of cultural difference from his transcultural Hmong Australian experience to develop works that offer more inclusive, diverse and hybrid tropes of belonging. These works often include everyday materials, objects, and processes that are based on Vue’s upbringing in Cairns, the resourcefulness of family members, and the influence of Hmong artistic traditions.

Vanghoua has exhibited in Australia and overseas, including Embodied Knowledge: Queensland Contemporary Art (2022) at QAGOMA and the 6th Singapore Biennale (2019).

This workshop is based on Vanghoua’s tape installations using industrial tapes on architectural surfaces, including windows and walls. These installations draw on languages, writing systems, and textiles to explore the adaptation of language and cultural translation within the Australian context. You will make your own tape artwork and consider how everyday materials can be used creatively to explore personal histories and then collaborate on a tape-affiti installation.

At the AGM all executive positions will be declared vacant. We always love to see new faces and welcome our regulars. Be sure to nominate if you would like to be more involved through an official QATA position. Among other benefits of being involved in your professional association, it’s a fabulous way of capturing evidence for a Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher application.

Last Wednesday we hosted our Term 4 In the Studio- with Larissa Warren.

With over 92 registrations for the workshop- we know you were just as excited!

Larissa talked us through her practice and took us on a tour of her studio in an underground bunker amongst the beautiful scenery of Tamborine Mountain. We learnt all about different clay types and their uses, the colours that can be achieved for different clays and firing temperatures, techniques for decoration and glazing, and some handy tips around storing and preserving clay in the classroom.

🚨Attention all beginner art teachers, teachers considering introducing clay into their art department and anyone wanting a refresher or some new tips- our TERM 4 IN THE STUDIO with LARISSA WARREN is tailored perfectly for you.

Larissa Warren is an established ceramicist and art teacher living on Tamborine Mountain. She works from her home studio; a reclaimed underground bunker.

In this workshop, Larissa will discuss:
⭐️ selecting different types of clays and what applications to use them in.
⭐️ firing temperature, texture, colour and strength.
⭐️ a few basic hand building techniques, pinch pots, coiling, rolling slabs.
⭐️ quick tricks to cut clay, ready for a class in 5 mins.
⭐️ storage of clay projects.
⭐️ how to avoid slumping, breakages and how to repair.
⭐️ everything about drying!
⭐️ how to prevent warping, breakages and kiln blow ups.
⭐️ firing- stacking, kiln shelves and props, how to maintain, safety, ventilation, setting the controller, including a set of firing schedules.
